Singapore Youth Team Wins Silver at SEA Youth Cup 2018

The Singapore National Youth Ice Hockey Team has clinched its first silver medal for Singapore in the Southeast Asia Youth Cup (S.E.A. Youth Cup) 2018 that has just concluded in Bangkok, Thailand today.

The Singapore boys had a 6-1 emphatic win against Indonesia in the opening match on September 3, 2018. They continued their winning streak with a 4-2 victory against Malaysia on September 5, 2018. Singapore lost to Thailand, the defending champions with a 1-7 score in the third game on September 6, 2018. The final game today saw a 8-4 smashing score against Philippines.“We are delighted that the year-long preparation, hard work and sacrifice by the entire national youth team have paid off. Most of all, we’re proud to have achieved our goal and brought home a medal for Singapore. Our eyes are now set for next year as we need to recruit new members. We hope that more young Singaporeans will be spurred to pick up ice hockey with more schools offering the sport under their co-curricular activities (CCA). Thanks to Hwa Chong International School’s introduction of the sport under its CCA, we have one new addition to the national youth team this year.” said Joewe Lam, Coach of Singapore National Youth Ice Hockey Team and Director of Singapore National Men’s Ice Hockey Team.

The S.E.A. Youth Cup is an annual tournament to develop the sport of ice hockey in Southeast Asia for youths in the Under-16 category. Thailand played host this year and teams from the other participating nations – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore have gathered in Bangkok for the tournament from September 3 to 7, 2018.  Singapore came in fourth in the inaugural tournament in Malaysia last year where Malaysia took second place followed by Indonesia. This year, Thailand won the tournament under the U15 Boys for the second time with 17-0

against Philippines, 13-2 against Indonesia, 7-1 against Singapore and 7-0 against Malaysia.

Singapore’s team of 12 players aged between 13 and 15 is among the smallest contingents of the competing countries as several members had to drop out of this year’s competition due to national examinations. Some are also finding it hard to fund the costs of ice rink rental for practices that take place 2 to 3 times a

week. All costs, including airfare and accommodation associated with the trip, are borne by the players and coaches themselves.

In view of the lack of government funding, the Singapore Ice Hockey Association has started a campaign on Giving.sg to raise $20,000 by September 9, 2018 to help defray the hefty costs.

Members of the public can contribute and help the local youths fly the Singapore flag and build a more inclusive society.

Donations can be made through www.giving.sg via the link http://bit.ly/2O1zW4Y, by cheque payable to “Singapore Ice Hockey Association” or bank transfer to DBS Bank account no. 065-900469-5 (branch code 065). All donations are eligible for tax rebate.
